Test Your Speeds
Click the “Start” button below to see how fast your internet is.
Tips for a good test
Test your internet speed in multiple locations of your home using a laptop or phone.
Focus on areas where you need the best internet connection, like your office or TV room.
Try at different times of day, such as when the whole family is using different devices.
What your results mean
More than 100 Mbps: Very fast connection, good for multiple devices streaming high-definition content and video calls. High-demand households or a lot of interference could still cause problems with video calls and streaming.
50 - 100 Mbps: Fast connection that should handle video calls and streaming. A lot of connected devices at once might cause problems.
20 - 50 Mbps: Should handle a video call or streaming movies, but extra streaming services or temporary drops in speed might lead to dropped calls or long load times. Downloading large files will take longer.
Less than 20 Mbps: A slow connection that will likely interfere with video calls, streaming television and gaming. Downloads will move slowly.
Still not right?
If you’re consistently seeing speeds above 100 Mbps throughout your home and still facing problems with bad video calls or slow streaming services, it could come down to poor signal quality, interference from other devices or other issues with your home network. Yes, we know this advice is repeated endlessly, but it really can help. Unplug both your modem and router, wait a few seconds, and plug them back in again. It’s best to plug in your modem first and wait a few minutes for it to restart before powering up your router. If you only have one device hooked up to your internet service, it is likely a combined modem and router and you only need to restart this single device.
-
Your Wi-Fi router works best when it is in the right location. The ideal spot is in the middle of your house or apartment, elevated above other electronic equipment like televisions. It’s best to have the router on a main floor, not in the basement.
-
If your Wi-Fi router sends out multiple networks with the same password, try connecting to one labeled “5G” or “5 GHz,” as this will provide faster service for most devices.
You can also try forgetting your network on your device and re-entering the password to connect again, which may improve your connection.
Finally, moving your device closer to your router, or even connecting directly to the router with an ethernet cable, should provide faster speeds.
-
Interference from other devices can hurt your Wi-Fi . Cordless landline phones, baby monitors and some Bluetooth devices can all interfere with the Wi-Fi signal. Try turning these devices off to see if speeds improve.
